Fort Lauderdale African-American cemetery added to historic register

Another Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach contains 69 white victims of the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, while 674 black victims were dumped into a 20-foot hole near 25th Street and North Tamarind Avenue. That mass grave received a marker in 2002.

Fort Lauderdale African-American cemetery added to historic register
The only remaining segregation-era African-American cemetery in Fort Lauderdale is now part of the National Register of Historic Places. Woodlawn Cemetery, east ofInterstate 95 near Sunrise Boulevard, was established in the 1920s because blacks during segregation were not allowed to bury their loved ones in the main cemeteries.
